Society..Are you ready?

Society isn't ready for me because I'm a woman, a black woman.

A black woman that will stand up when they expect me to lay down

A black woman who will state facts not just opinions

A black woman who abides by the law, but doesn't believe there is any justice

They say "Protect and Serve", but all I see is Homicide and Acquittal"

One, two, three, four...hundred?

I only have one question, how many more?

Hands up in the classroom, get called on hands up in the street get shot

Half Jamaican Half Nigerian, society isn't ready for my culture

my beliefs

and definitely not my beautiful brown skin

Love, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is what makes the world go round

But excuse me if I don't feel loved because my life is at risk as there is no justice

and my pursuit for happiness isn't going so well because to some my color holds no value

Liberty they say is the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority..well I guess liberty doesn't apply to me

And life...well, life as a black woman can not be glamorized nor is it guaranteed

So no, society isn't ready for me

Or my hopes for better for my people

Society isn't ready for my strength, my hard work

Society is not ready for my success, but society better prepare for me, because I'm coming...we are coming

In fact, we're already here.
